COLUMBUS, Ga. — A rare winter weather event brought snowfall to Columbus, Georgia on Sunday, January 18, 2026. This surprised residents across the Chattahoochee Valley, which prompted school closures, and a few logistics disruptions.
The snow arrived as part of a larger winter system that moved across the Southeast, combining freezing temperatures with moisture from the Gulf. State officials had anticipated the storm, with Governor Brian Kemp activating the State Emergency Operations Center ahead of time and urging residents to prepare for hazardous conditions. Columbus typically sees little to no snow in a given year, making even a light dusting quite the significance.
As temperatures dropped overnight, the city was shocked to find that the snow actually stuck! Some Churches announced they were postponing as icy road conditions developed, marking an unexpected snow day for many students the next day. Drivers were urged to use caution as bridges and secondary roads became slick, particularly during the morning commute.
Residents shared photos and videos of snow-covered neighborhoods, downtown streets, and children playing outside.
“I never thought I’d see this again,” one resident wrote on a local discussion board, while others shared images of snowflakes falling across the city in the early morning hours. City officials reported no major injuries or emergencies related to the storm, and road conditions gradually improved as temperatures rose and the snow began to melt later in the day.
Though brief, the snowfall left a lasting impression on the community. For many residents, the rare winter weather served as a reminder of how unusual snow remains in South Georgia—and how quickly it can bring daily routines to a halt. A memorable winter flurry for the books, painting Columbus as charming as ever.
